Chapter 1

The Cupboard under the Stairs

Ten-year-old Harry Potter was used to an ordinary, quiet life, even if his home was far from comfortable. He lived with his aunt, uncle, and cousin Dudley at Number Four, Privet Drive. While Dudley had two big bedrooms full of toys, Harry slept in a tiny cupboard under the stairs. He spent his days keeping out of trouble, doing chores, and wearing Dudley’s old, baggy clothes.

Harry often wondered about his real parents. His aunt and uncle always said they had died in a car crash, but Harry had a strange feeling there was more to the story. Sometimes, unusual things happened around him that he couldn't explain. Once, his hair grew back overnight after a terrible haircut! Harry wished he could understand why he felt so different from everyone else.

One sunlit morning, just days before Harry's eleventh birthday, the mail flap clicked. Harry was sent to gather the post. Amidst the water bills and postcards lay a heavy envelope made of thick, yellowish parchment. The address was written in striking emerald-green ink: *Mr. H. Potter, The Cupboard under the Stairs, 4 Privet Drive.*

Harry’s heart skipped a beat. Nobody had ever sent him a letter in his entire life! Who could possibly know where he slept? Before he could open it, Uncle Vernon snatched the letter right out of his hands, his face turning pale with sudden alarm. "This is an absolute mistake!" Uncle Vernon shouted, ripping the parchment to pieces.

Letters from Nobody

After that fateful morning, the letters did not stop. In fact, they multiplied. The next day, two more letters arrived. The day after that, three appeared in the morning post. No matter how hard Uncle Vernon tried to block the mail slot or nail wooden boards over the front door, the parchment envelopes found their way into the house.

Everyday life at Number Four quickly turned into absolute chaos. Letters were found tucked inside milk bottles delivered to the front porch, hidden inside egg cartons, and slid under the back door. Harry tried his best to catch just one letter, but Uncle Vernon was always watching him closely.

By Sunday, Uncle Vernon was exhausted, sitting at the breakfast table with dark circles under his eyes. "No post on Sundays!" he declared with a satisfied smile, taking a sip of tea. "Not a single letter today!"

Just as he spoke, a loud rustling sound echoed from the living room fireplace. Dozens—then hundreds—of heavy parchment letters came shooting out of the chimney like feathered arrows, bouncing off the walls and swirling through the air! Harry leaped onto the sofa, reaching up into the flurry of paper to grab one. "Out! Out!" yelled Uncle Vernon, grabbing Harry by the waist before he could read a single line. Something extraordinary was happening, and Harry was determined to find out what it was.

The Stormy Island

Uncle Vernon decided that the family had to flee. He packed everyone into the car and drove for hours through the countryside, checking over his shoulder at every turn. Finally, as night fell, they arrived at the edge of the dark sea.

Uncle Vernon hired a small wooden rowboat and took them across the choppy waves to a tiny, lonely hut perched on a giant sea rock. Rain poured down from the sky, and cold ocean spray splashed against the wooden walls. The storm outside raged, blowing freezing wind through the cracks in the cabin walls.

Inside the dark shack, Dudley fell asleep on the lumpy sofa under a thin blanket. Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon lay down in the small bedroom. Harry, however, could not sleep. He lay on the cold wooden floor with only a thin sheet, watching the glowing dial of Dudley’s wrist watch on the table nearby.

The ticking illuminated the dark room: 11:58 PM. In two minutes, Harry would turn eleven years old. He thought about his past birthdays, which were usually ignored or forgotten entirely. "Happy Birthday to me," Harry whispered softly, using his finger to draw a frosted birthday cake in the dust on the floor. He blew softly at his drawn candles as the watch face clicked to midnight: 12:00 AM.

Suddenly—BOOM! A massive knock echoed across the heavy wooden door, shaking the entire hut to its foundation.

The Giant Guest

The knock sounded again, louder this time. Uncle Vernon rushed into the main room holding a rifle, while Aunt Petunia cowered behind him. With a powerful crash, the hinges snapped, and the door fell flat onto the floor!

Standing in the doorway was a giant of a man. His hair was long and wild, his bushy black beard almost hid his warm smile, and his eyes glinted like dark beetles under his thick brows. He stepped inside, picked up the fallen door, and easily slotted it back into its wooden frame to keep the rain out.

"Could do with a warm cup of tea," the giant said, looking around the small room. He looked down at Harry and smiled warmly. "And here's Harry! Last time I saw you, you were just a baby."

Harry stared up at the giant in complete amazement. "Who are you?" he asked quietly.

"Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts," the giant said proudly. He reached into one of his deep coat pockets and pulled out a slightly squished cardboard box. Inside was a large, sticky chocolate cake with green frosting that read: *Happy Birthday Harry.*

Harry felt a sudden wave of warmth in his chest. "Thank you!" he beamed. It was the first birthday cake he had ever received.

"Got something else for you, too," Hagrid added, pulling out a crisp parchment envelope from his coat. It was the very same letter written in bright emerald ink!

A Secret Revealed

Harry unfolded the letter carefully, his hands trembling slightly with anticipation. He read the words aloud:

*Dear Mr. Potter, We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry...*

Harry stopped reading and looked up at Hagrid, thoroughly confused. "Hogwarts? School of what?"

"Witchcraft and Wizardry, of course!" Hagrid laughed warmly. "You're a wizard, Harry. And a proper good one you'll be, once you're trained up a bit."

Harry stared in disbelief. "I'm a... a what? No, you've made a mistake. I'm just Harry! I live in a cupboard under the stairs!"

"Have you ever made things happen when you were angry or scared?" Hagrid asked gently, his dark eyes shining with kindness.

Harry paused, thinking back over his life. He remembered floating up onto the school roof when being chased, turning his teacher's wig blue, and making the glass screen of a zoo enclosure vanish into thin air! Suddenly, everything made complete sense. All those strange, unexplainable moments hadn't been accidents at all.

"Your mum and dad were remarkable wizards, Harry," Hagrid explained softly. "You belong to a whole new world that's been waiting for you to come home." Harry felt an immense weight lift off his shoulders as he realized he was finally understood.

A Brand New Journey

By the time the morning sun rose over the ocean, the storm had completely cleared away. Golden light painted the sky, warming the cool morning breeze. Harry sat near the bow of the rowboat as Hagrid rowed them smoothly back toward the mainland.

The cold, distant life at Privet Drive felt like a fading dream. For eleven years, Harry had believed he was ordinary, unwanted, and alone. Now, knowing his true heritage, he felt a bright fire of hope burning in his heart.

"Where are we going first, Hagrid?" Harry asked eagerly, watching seagulls circle high above the calm blue water.

"London!" Hagrid replied with a boisterous laugh. "We've got to buy your school books, robes, and a proper magic wand for the term!"

Harry looked back one last time at the tiny island fading into the distance. He had so many questions about magic, about his parents, and about Hogwarts, but for the first time in his life, he wasn't afraid of the future. He smiled as the boat glided toward the shore, ready to step into a magical world where he truly belonged.
